This week we want to highlight one of the many bLeaders we’ve met during our travels. Introducing Janeth! Originally from Chamula, Janeth is a student in Mexico City studying human rights with a passion for women’s health. She loves to give back to her community and is working to get Divine Drops educational materials in schools across Chamula.
How old were you when you had your first period?
15
What stood out about your first period?
It was weird and I felt uncomfortable.
What menstrual care products do you currently use.
For care none, only feminine pads.
Did anyone give you “the talk” after your first period or Did anyone educate you about the menstrual cycle?
They talked to me in elementary school a little bit and my mom told me that the period is something normal.
Did you ever feel self-conscious about your period and why?
On many occasions, I’ve been a little embarrassed to buy feminine products or to be seen using them. I feel like your period should be kept private.
Did you have access to period products like pads, tampons and menstrual cups?
I used to buy pads from the store, and that’s what I know.
What do you think is the most important thing to teach girls about their period?
What is normal during your period and what your period indicates about your health.
Where did you grow up?
In Chamula in the state of Chiapas.
Do you ever feel self-conscious about your period when you’re in public?
Yes, because I am afraid that the place where I sit will be stained.
How do you feel when you know your period is coming?
I don’t really know when my period is coming, but I feel when my period starts. I get mood swings, but I don't’ think I care.
Do you think you can improve the way you approach period care?
I don’t really know if there is a way to improve it or what a better period would be like.
What hopes do you have for the future of menstrual health?
I hope that there is more information about our health and what our period shows. I also hope that girls trust themselves more and do not feel sorry for something as normal as a period.
